General Pump Company, Inc. was originally started in 1938 by Matt Peck and known as Peck Well Drilling- a cable tool drilling company in Gardena California. In 1948 Bud Hill and Les Janeway from Byron Jackson Pumps joined Matt Peck, and changed the name from Peck Well Drilling to General Pump Service, and moved the new company to 127th and Main Street in Los Angeles, California. General Pump Service incorporated in July 1952, and was joined by Jack Kent who assisted them in building the only telescoping third leg pump pulling and water well service rigs in California. Two of these pump pulling and service rigs are still in operation today – both by General Pump Company, Inc. From the 1950’s to 1970’s, the company grew with the Southern California economy maintaining a strong presence as a water well service company dedicated to the ongoing needs of water agencies, agricultural and commercial customers.
In January 1981, William M. Tweed took ownership of General Pump Service (currently known as General Pump Company, Inc.) supporting local municipalities, industrial, agriculture and drillers to develop new water sources, and redevelop existing wells in the Los Angeles, Inland Empire and Orange County areas.
With new ownership and the influx of new talent and technical know-how, the company expanded its services and customer base. By the mid 1980’s General Pump Company, Inc. facility in Los Angeles was crowded and travel was challenging at times. So in 1987 General Pump Company, Inc. left the small yard and buildings of our Los Angeles office and moved to our current facility in San Dimas. This facility, once a lemon packing house with large open buildings, allowed General Pump Company, Inc. to expand our capabilities, services and growing fleet of equipment.
Over the next 21-years, General Pump Company, Inc. worked with almost every major municipality in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, and other significant municipalities and agricultural customers in West Los Angeles (Castaic and Santa Clarita areas), along with some customers in Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties.
In early 2008, General Pump Company, Inc. was approached about the purchase of assets from Barbour Well Corporation – a prominent local well and pump service contractor in Ventura County. The purchase included key work over and pumps rigs, and personnel with strong knowledge of the area and customers. So by the end of 2008, General Pump Company, Inc. completed the purchase of these assets. In 2010, Barbour Well Corporation decided to move their entire operation and facility out of state and General Pump Company, Inc. was fortunate enough to purchase their facility giving General Pump Company, Inc. a permanent office, and manufacturing and repair facility in Camarillo, California with strong equipment and crew.
